What’s the best paint for my trim?
In this video, Gene and Hunter discuss whether to use paint with a high or semi-gloss sheen when painting the trim or woodwork in an older home. Trim, which is usually referring to your home’s baseboards, window casings, door casings, hand rails, etc., can be painted in different sheens, depending on the aesthetic that is trying to be achieved.
Older homes tend to have more imperfections, which will be highlighted with use of a higher sheen. So, in that case, a semi-gloss paint will often be the best option as it will help mask any inconsistencies. And if you have a newer home and would like to showcase the builder’s craftsmanship and carpentry work, opt for a high-gloss paint. And when it comes to homes with a higher turnover rate, such as apartments, go with a flat paint as it is easier to paint over multiple times.
Keep in mind that trim-specific paint tends to dry harder than regular paint, which adds durability to areas that endure an increased amount of wear and tear, such as sweeping, vacuuming and wiping.
