When to Use Two Coats of Finish (Video)

When do I need to use two coats of paint?
More often than not, two coats of paint will be required to get the job done. But every now and then when you just want to freshen up the surface, one will suffice. Typically, when repainting a wall with a new color or sheen, two coats will be necessary, especially when the wall has endured some wear and tear. Not only will the second coat mask the previous, but it will also ensure that you covered every possible inch of the surface.
Trying to establish coverage with one heavy coat can lead to other problems that become visible when the paint dries, such as runs, ropes and drips. These imperfections become increasingly noticeable on tall walls that get hit with natural sunlight.
